  • ABS granted two AIPs to HD KSOE for advanced LNG and ethane cargo systems.
  • The LNG subcooling refrigeration system boosts efficiency by over 10% and minimizes boil-off gas.
  • The ethane cargo handling and re-liquefaction system improves safety and efficiency across vessel sizes.
  • These approvals strengthen innovation and competitiveness in shipbuilding technology.

ABS has awarded two approvals in principle (AIP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for advanced cargo handling systems designed for LNG and ethane carriers. These approvals highlight innovations aimed at improving cargo safety, efficiency, and reliability, according to ABS.

Advanced Cargo Handling Systems for LNG and Ethane Carriers

The first approval covers a subcooling refrigeration system for LNG carriers that uses a mixed gas-and-liquid refrigerant, improving efficiency by over 10 percent compared to conventional systems. By supercooling LNG to temperatures below -170° C, the system reduces boil-off gas risks and ensures better cargo integrity during transit. The second approval recognizes HD KSOE’s development of a re-liquefaction and cargo handling system tailored for ethane carriers of varying capacities. Designed to maintain stable temperature and pressure, this technology enhances operational safety and efficiency in ethane transport.
