West Coast’s first LNG Bunker Barge to be built to ABS class, says an article published on Offshore Energy.

About developer and the barge

ABS will class the first LNG Bunker Barge on North America’s west coast, developed by Cryopeak LNG Solutions Corporation and Island Tug & Barge.

Canada-based LNG distributor Cryopeak and maritime company Island Tug & Barge, a subsidiary of Tidewater Canada, developed a design for a 4,000 cubic metres articulated tug and barge.

Barge design

The design utilises one of ITB Marine’s tugs to deliver LNG as a fuel to shipping companies at ports on the West Coast.

Barge delivery

The LNG bunker barge is expected to serve shipping from 2023.

Expand LNG availability

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), which classifies and certifies LNG vessels and systems globally, is to support this project to further expand the availability of LNG along the west coast.

About the project

“The marine industry is seeking solutions to enable the use of LNG as part of its journey to reduce emissions and lower fuel costs. This project delivers that, and will enable vessels to adopt LNG as a cleaner alternative fuel,” said Calum McClure, CEO of Cryopeak.
