ADNOC Logistics And Services Expands LNG Fleet With New Carrier “Al Shelila”

425

ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s ADNOC, has received the first of six new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from China’s Jiangnan Shipyard. Named Al Sheila, this advanced LNG carrier was delivered two months ahead of schedule, with the remaining five ships set for delivery between 2025 and 2026.

Key Highlights of Al Shelila

  1. Enhanced Capacity and Efficiency
    • Al Shelila boasts a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters, surpassing the 137,000 cubic meters of ADNOC L&S’s older LNG carriers. This expansion supports ADNOC L&S’s goal to meet rising global LNG demand by increasing fleet capability.
  2. Environmental Advancements
    • The new carrier incorporates advanced technology to reduce methane emissions by up to 50% compared to older LNG carriers. This aligns with ADNOC’s broader sustainability goals to minimize greenhouse gas emissions across its fleet.
  3. Immediate Deployment
    • Following delivery, Al Shelila will commence operations under a charter agreement with a prominent global energy trader, though the client remains unnamed.

Fleet Expansion and Future Growth

This delivery marks a significant milestone in ADNOC L&S’s broader fleet expansion initiative. The company’s contracts with Jiangnan Shipyard, signed in 2022, are part of a strategic push to enhance ADNOC L&S’s LNG transport capacity amid growing global demand for natural gas.

In 2024, ADNOC L&S further accelerated its growth by contracting up to 23 additional energy-efficient vessels, encompassing:

  • 8-10 LNG carriers to enhance natural gas transport capacity,
  • Nine Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs) for diverse energy shipments, and
  • Four Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) to support ADNOC’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

Implications for the Energy Sector

With a focus on sustainable shipping solutions, ADNOC’s fleet expansion aligns with global decarbonization efforts in the energy transport sector. The new ships are expected to enhance ADNOC L&S’s competitive positioning in the LNG market by providing high-capacity, environmentally friendly transport options.
