- Product tankers connected to shore power in Gävle harbor.
- The team successfully navigated despite all the explosive complexities.
- Tern Fors and Tern Island becomes more streamlined.
The product Tern Fors achieved a groundbreaking moment to shore power in Gävle harbor, marking this globally first operation of this kind, reports Terntank.
Success Of The Connection
The vessel was connected for over three hours, this connection facilitated the vessel’s uploading operations, using shore electricity for the first time, consuming a total of 1,424 kWh during the process.
Largest Project Emerged With Complexities
Despite the complexities involved in connecting tankers to shore power due to the risk of explosions, the team successfully navigated challenges. Gothenburg Port leads the Green Cable project intending to develop a new global standard for the electrical connection of tankers at the dock in a hazardous environment.
Solving Challenges Along The Way
Direct coordination between the vessel’s crew, subcontractors from Norway and China, and Gävle port’s electricians ensured troubleshooting and adjustments, guaranteeing a smooth operation.
Anticipated Improvements
Rigorous safety measures were in place, such as specially adapted connection points, overpressure in onshore containers, and nitrogen-filled connection houses aboard the vessel. These precautions aim to prevent potential hazards, ensuring a secure environment during the electrical connections. Connections for Tern Fors and Tern Island becomes more streamlined. Learnings from this inaugural connection will likely lead to smoother and quicker operations in subsequent attempts.
“The next time we do it, it will probably go much smoother; now we know more about how the connection should be made and that it works as intended. Next time, it will likely be much quicker,” says Lennart Knutsson
