AI-Driven Optimization In Car Carrier Operations

7

Ippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), MTI Co., Ltd., and Grid Co., Ltd. have jointly launched a groundbreaking AI-based system to automate and optimize ship allocation planning for car carriers. With full-scale operations beginning in July, this initiative marks a significant step toward improving operational efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and advancing sustainability in the shipping industry.

Background of the Development

NYK operates the world’s largest fleet of over 100 car carriers, making ship allocation planning a highly complex and labor-intensive process. Traditionally, this planning required evaluating multiple conditions for hundreds of voyages scheduled months in advance. To address these challenges, NYK and its partners developed a system that leverages AI to organize, analyze, and streamline decision-making factors involved in global shipping operations.

System Features and Benefits

The AI system evaluates millions of potential schedules and generates the most efficient plan in just about 10 minutes. It considers customer needs, vessel operating status, repair schedules, and port congestion risks, optimizing key performance indicators such as vessel utilization, transport efficiency, and overall costs. Furthermore, it incorporates next-generation fuel use and carbon pricing, directly contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and aligning operations with environmental goals.

The collaboration between NYK, MTI, and Grid demonstrates how AI can revolutionize traditional shipping practices. By combining operational efficiency with environmental responsibility, the system not only enhances business performance but also supports the broader goal of building a sustainable and technologically advanced maritime industry.
