  • ClassNK granted an AiP for an Advanced Maneuvering Assistant System.
  • This system predicts potential collisions with other ships.
  • The system was tested on the “HOKUREN MARU No. 2”.

ClassNK granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to the “Advanced Maneuvering Assistant System” developed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Kawasaki Kinkai Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Japan Radio Co., Ltd., and YDK Technologies Co., Ltd. reports Class NK.

System Functionality

This system predicts potential collisions with other ships, generates avoidance routes based on collision regulations (COLREGs) and assists operators in avoiding these collisions. It suggests up to two alternative routes allowing the ship to return to its original course within an hour, and links with Auto Pilot and ECDIS for track control.

Sea Demonstration

The system was tested on the “HOKUREN MARU No. 2,” a large RORO cargo ship, as part of the Fully Autonomous Ship Project administered by the Nippon Foundation. It’s a step towards autonomous navigation.

ClassNK’s Role

ClassNK reviewed the system’s conceptual design based on its guidelines for automated/autonomous ship operations. After confirming compliance, they issued the AiP, which signifies conformity with regulations and helps in the design phase.

Purpose of AiP

An AiP is granted in the early design stages, ensuring conformity with regulations and reducing post-design rework. It also serves as a basis for external verification of design status.
