In a major stride toward maritime decarbonization, Alfa Laval has announced the world’s first marine boiler system capable of safely incinerating ammonia emissions. Designed as an Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS), the innovation will be deployed on four dual-fuel ammonia vessels owned by Trafigura. This breakthrough reinforces Alfa Laval’s role as a global pioneer in alternative fuel technologies.
A Breakthrough for Ammonia-Powered Shipping
As ammonia gains momentum as a zero-carbon marine fuel, managing its toxic emissions onboard has become a critical challenge. Alfa Laval’s advanced boiler system directly addresses this issue by safely handling ammonia waste gases produced during engine and fuel system operations.
The system, developed in partnership with WinGD and HD Hyundai Mipo, is scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028 and marks a significant industry milestone.
Integrated Design for Efficiency and Safety
Unlike traditional marine boilers, the new system goes beyond steam generation. It will serve as a multi-purpose solution for ammonia incineration, handling emissions from purge gases, boil-off gas, and tank emptying operations. This integration eliminates the need for separate equipment, reducing vessel weight and saving valuable onboard space—key benefits for shipowners and shipbuilders alike.
Backed by Proven Multi-Fuel Expertise
Alfa Laval brings decades of expertise in fuel-handling and combustion systems for LNG and methanol vessels. Since 2021, the company has been testing and refining ammonia combustion technology at its state-of-the-art Test & Training Centre in Denmark. This track record ensures both the technical reliability and safety of the new ARMS boiler system.
Industry Collaboration Driving Innovation
The project reflects strong collaboration among top maritime players. With support from Trafigura, WinGD, and HD Hyundai Mipo, Alfa Laval’s technology aims to accelerate the commercial adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel. It also sets a new benchmark for safety, environmental responsibility, and efficient vessel design in the era of clean shipping.
Alfa Laval’s ammonia-incinerating boiler system represents a turning point in green marine innovation. By combining environmental safety, operational efficiency, and compact design, the system offers a practical path forward for ammonia-powered vessels. As the shipping industry transitions toward cleaner fuels, this pioneering technology positions Alfa Laval as a leader in the future of sustainable maritime operations.
