Algoma Central Corporation has proudly announced the delivery of its newest vessel, the Algoma Legacy. This marks a major achievement for the company, as it now holds an ownership interest in 100 vessels worldwide. The milestone not only reflects Algoma’s growth over the decades but also highlights its commitment to sustainability and innovation in marine transportation.
The Arrival of the Algoma Legacy
The Algoma Legacy is the first of three next-generation methanol-ready, Kamsarmax-sized ocean belt self-unloading vessels. This advanced ship represents a step forward in sustainable shipping, being 40% more fuel-efficient and optimized for cargo lift. The vessel will join the world’s largest Ocean Self-Unloader Pool, with two more sister ships expected to arrive in 2026 and early 2027.
The introduction of these vessels will also allow Algoma to phase out older ships, ensuring efficiency and reducing environmental impact. According to Gregg Ruhl, President & CEO of Algoma, the achievement celebrates both technological advancement and the dedication of employees who have contributed to the company’s growth.
From Regional Player to Global Operator
A decade ago, Algoma operated fewer than 40 vessels, focusing mainly on the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway. Today, the company has expanded its presence significantly, adding more than 60 ships to its dry and liquid bulk fleets and strengthening its role as a global operator.
This success has been built on strategic partnerships, diversification in niche short sea shipping markets, and a strong commitment to customer service. With seven new vessels currently under construction, Algoma continues to expand responsibly while prioritizing sustainability and innovation.
The delivery of the Algoma Legacy is not just the addition of another ship but a landmark in Algoma’s history. By reaching its 100th vessel milestone and advancing toward greener technologies, the company has positioned itself as a global leader in sustainable short sea shipping. With more modern vessels on the way, Algoma Central Corporation is set to shape the future of marine transportation while honoring its legacy of service and innovation.
