- Innovative Hybrid Catamaran to Support Marine Research in Southern California.
- Teknicraft-Designed Vessel Features Cutting-Edge Hybrid Propulsion System.
- All American Marine Advances Sustainable Marine Technology.
Bellingham, WA, November 13th, 2024, All American Marine, the leading custom designer and manufacturer of hybrid and electric vessels, today announced it had signed a contract to build a 63-foot hybrid catamaran for the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San). The vessel, designed by Teknicraft, will be utilised to perform ocean sampling and scientific research that will help further environmental sustainability in marine operation, reports AAM.
Advanced Hybrid Propulsion System
The 63-foot ocean sampling vessel will boast a next-generation hybrid propulsion system, powered by Cummins QSB 6.7 integrated with ABB’s Series Hybrid technology. The BorgWarner Energy Storage System (ESS) will provide up to 588 kW of clean energy, meeting California’s stringent zero-emissions standards and delivering 30% of operational power.
Purpose-Built for Ocean Monitoring
Designed for the Southern California coast, the vessel will enhance OC San’s ability to conduct environmental monitoring, marine research, and ocean sampling. Key features include:
- Scientific Equipment: A Teledyne Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), Okeanus dual-drum winch, and custom A-frame for complex oceanographic research.
- Workspaces: Wet and dry labs for on-site sample analysis and live-aboard accommodations for extended missions.
- Quiet Operation: Acoustically insulated auxiliary generators minimize noise pollution, ensuring a conducive work environment.
Hybrid Efficiency and Precision Engineering
The catamaran will employ dual propulsion permanent magnet motors powered by the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). These will ensure the vessel always works at full efficiency without significantly increasing on environmental footprints. Another precision-engineered winch system will control the offshore research equipment deployment effectively.
Sustainable Vessel Construction
Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA, facility, the vessel will meet US Coast Guard Subchapter T standards. Sea trials will comprehensively validate its performance and meet all specifications.
A Partnership for Progress
“We are thrilled to partner with the Orange County Sanitation District on this innovative project,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of All American Marine. “This hybrid ocean sampling vessel will not only support vital research and monitoring efforts, but it also underscores our commitment to building vessels with hybrid and electric propulsion systems. We look forward to delivering a vessel that exceeds OC San’s expectations for both performance and environmental impact.”
Once complete, the hybrid catamaran will serve as a key asset for oceanographic research and monitoring in Southern California, setting a new standard for environmentally friendly marine operations.
