Almighty Thud! Ship Crashes Into Sea Wall

1906

On May 30, a cargo ship crashed with a loud thud into a sea wall located at Gorleston-on-Sea.

What happened?

The sequence of collision was described in detail by a holidaymaker Mr. Andy Rockall who described that the cargo ship crashed into the sea wall with an ‘almighty thud’ at Quay road near Gorleston-on-Sea.

Panicked crew

He further described that the crew members onboard the vessel were panicked with efforts to reverse the vessel as it neared the wall.

He added, “There was the noise of chainwalls dropping quickly and then there was this almighty thud against a two-foot thick concrete wall. It looked like there was problem [with the boat] because there was plenty of black smoke coming from it”.

Engine issues

It has been suspected that the cargo vessel must have run into engine problems which might have disabled the navigation system. The photographs taken from the site showed a large crack in the sea wall and pavement bricks forced out of place by the impact.

The vessel has been detained at the port for further investigation and the authorities are assessing the damages sustained by the sea wall.
