Alternative-Propulsion Container Ships Now Dominate Global Fleet Capacity

8

The container shipping industry has reached a major turning point, with vessels powered by alternative propulsion systems such as LNG, methanol, or equipped with exhaust scrubbers now accounting for more than half of the world’s total container capacity. According to Alphaliner’s Monthly Monitor, these cleaner and more efficient vessels collectively carry 50.6% of all containers globally, marking a key milestone in the industry’s transition toward greener operations.

Shift in Fleet Composition

Although conventionally powered ships still make up the majority in terms of vessel count  about 4,850 ships or 73.6% of the global fleet their dominance is waning. LNG-powered ships now represent 3.2% of the fleet (208 vessels), methanol-powered ships 0.6% (38 vessels), while 22.6% (1,492 vessels) are equipped with exhaust scrubbers to reduce sulfur emissions.

However, when measured by TEU capacity, the picture changes dramatically. Conventional propulsion accounts for less than 49.4% (16.1 million TEU) of total capacity. In contrast, scrubber-fitted ships hold a significant 41.8% share (13.6 million TEU), LNG-powered vessels contribute 7.6% (2.46 million TEU), and methanol-powered ships make up 1.3% (~0.4 million TEU).

Future Outlook: Greener Horizons Ahead

The momentum toward alternative fuels shows no sign of slowing. More than 720 vessels representing 75% of all ships currently on order are designed to run on alternative propulsion systems. These upcoming ships will collectively add over 9.3 million TEU, or 93% of all capacity on order, powered by greener technologies like LNG, methanol, and other low-carbon fuels.

This growing preference reflects shipping companies’ efforts to meet tightening emissions regulations and sustainability goals, positioning the sector for a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.

With alternative-propulsion container ships now surpassing traditional ones in carrying capacity, the maritime industry has entered a new era of sustainable shipping. As the global orderbook continues to favor low-emission technologies, the balance of power in maritime propulsion is clearly shifting driving the industry closer to its decarbonization objectives and reshaping the future of global trade.
