Amadeus Saffier Begins Maiden Voyage, Pioneering Sustainable Shipping

6

According to  Offshore Energy , In early October 2024, the general cargo vessel Amadeus Saffier embarked on its maiden voyage from Antwerp, Belgium, to Gijon, Spain. This marks the first operational journey for the 3,640 dwt ship after its successful sea trials in September. The vessel, along with its sister ship, Amadeus Sardius, was delivered to its owner, Dutch shipping company De Bock Maritiem.

Innovative Design for CO2 Reduction

Amadeus Saffier is built with a focus on sustainability, equipped with a diesel-electric drive system designed to transition from sulfur-reduced marine gas oil (MGO) to future fuels. This flexibility in fuel choice is expected to play a key role in reducing the ship’s CO2 emissions. The ship is also fitted with Econowind’s VentoFoils, a wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) that works in combination with the vessel’s optimized hull shape and propellor, allowing for up to 50% emissions reduction and 30% higher energy efficiency compared to similar ships in the current fleet.

Versatile Operations in Short-Sea Routes

With a payload capacity of 3,500 tonnes, Amadeus Saffier is set to operate across various European short-sea routes, including the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, and Black Sea regions. Its low draught of 5 meters when fully loaded makes it suitable for navigating inland waterways like the Rhine River and the Albert Canal, facilitating a seamless transition between sea and river transport.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

Gilbèrt de Bock, Owner and General Manager of De Bock Maritiem, described the commissioning of Amadeus Saffier as a milestone in the company’s journey toward sustainable shipping. Steffen Bauer, CEO of HGK Shipping, also praised the vessel as an example of the modern, efficient fleet needed to meet increasing customer demands for sustainable transport solutions.

Amadeus Saffier represents a key step in the renewal of the European short-sea fleet, setting new standards in energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of maritime logistics.
