Anglo-Eastern Univan Group has unveiled Mission 30, a forward-looking initiative aimed at transforming the future of maritime leadership. The goal: to increase the percentage of seafarers under the age of 30 in management-level positions—from the current 1% to 30%—by the year 2030. In an era of technological advancement and shifting workforce dynamics, Anglo-Eastern is taking strong steps to cultivate young, digitally fluent, and agile professionals to meet the growing complexity of modern shipping.
Why ‘Mission 30’ Matters: Ageing Officers and Industry Demands
According to the 2021 Seafarer Workforce Report by BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping, the average age of management-level officers has been rising since 2015. The number of officers under 30 in key roles like Chief Officer and Second Engineer has dropped sharply. Anglo-Eastern’s internal data echoes this trend, with only 1% of its current management officers under 30.
Vinay Singh, Group Managing Director of Marine HR, emphasizes the urgent need for younger talent. “We invite all young seafarers to seize this opportunity – to grow faster, lead sooner, and become the next generation of maritime professionals. With the right support and ambition, we can help them reach new heights in their sea career before 30. We look forward to helping them get there.”
Career Care Programme: Guiding Growth at Every Step
To support this vision, Anglo-Eastern launched its Career Care Programme in 2024. The initiative includes a dedicated Career Care team composed of experienced Marine HR professionals. Their goal is to provide structured, ongoing support to seafarers throughout their careers.
Key services include:
-
Promotion Guidance
-
Support for Certificate of Competency (COC) Exams
-
Vessel Type Transitions and Reskilling
-
Pathways to Shore Jobs
This programme aligns with Anglo-Eastern’s broader WE Care initiative, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to seafarer wellbeing and professional development.
Tools for Growth: How Mission 30 Will Work
Mission 30 isn’t just a vision—it’s backed by practical tools:
-
Personalised Career Ladder Map: Each officer receives a tailored roadmap showing how to reach their career goals.
-
Targeted Training & Assessment: Focused programs help prepare candidates for timely promotions.
-
Mentorship Programmes: New officers are mentored by experienced peers for smoother transitions and better decision-making.
Already, more than 5,000 operational-level officers and cadets have been contacted for enrolment, marking a strong early response to the initiative.
With Mission 30, Anglo-Eastern is not only addressing the ageing officer gap but also inspiring a new generation of maritime leaders. The programme’s blend of personalised career planning, targeted training, and mentorship ensures that young seafarers are well-equipped to lead the industry into a smarter, greener, and more agile future.
