In less than three weeks, a 68-year-old man, was bitten by a shark in North Carolina in the seventh attack off the US state’s coast.
The National Park Service confirmed a shark attack, seventh in series, occurred recently at North Carolina coast. This time the victim was a 68-year-old man, who was swimming in waist-deep water with his adult son on Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks. He was attacked by a shark measuring about 7ft (2.1m) in length just after midday on Wednesday. He suffered injuries to his ribcage, lower leg, hip and both hands after having a combat with the animal.
Considering the past trends, Sharks have pounced on several children that included a 13-year old girl and a 16-year old boy who each lost their left arms along North Carolina’s coast. The earlier attacks involved an 18-year-old teen, who was airlifted in critical condition to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia after bitten by a shark. The teen had suffered injuries to his right calf, buttocks and both hands while swimming with others.
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), there are about 30-40 shark attacks recorded in the US each year where most of them are not fatal. But this year the number of shark attacks in the US is above average and added more number of victims till July weekend. Experts have cited many reasons for such an upsurge in numbers of such incidents. Many have speculated that shark fishing is responsible for such bloody encounters in addition to the rising water temperatures, saltier water or increase of sea turtle population and increase in number of people entering sea.
