Antigua and Barbuda is preparing to revolutionize Caribbean shipping by transforming its main port into the region’s first fully decarbonized facility.
Through a landmark partnership, the nation is positioning itself as a leader in clean maritime energy, aiming to serve as a green fuel transshipment and refueling hub while welcoming the world’s first absolute-zero-emission containership.
Transforming the Port into a Green Fuel Hub
Authorities have committed to creating a dedicated hub for the storage and supply of sustainable fuel, including green hydrogen. This initiative will make Antigua a key destination for vessels seeking eco-friendly bunkering options and clean shore power, aligning with upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.
Building the World’s First Absolute-Zero-Emission Containership
The partnership also supports the development of Veer’s flagship HyWindship vessels, powered by wind and green hydrogen. These ships, including the approved “Design Nº1,” are designed to cross oceans without emitting carbon. Once operational, Antigua could become the home base for the world’s first absolute-zero-emission containership fleet.
Attracting Investments and Modernizing Infrastructure
To support these ambitions, Antigua and Barbuda’s port authority plans to designate areas for fuel production, storage, and delivery. Investments will be required to expand capacity, enabling both bunkering and cold-ironing (electric power supply to vessels at berth). This modernization will enhance the port’s competitiveness and environmental credentials.
Expanding Global Impact and Registry Opportunities
If successful, Antigua could establish the largest clean and green ship registry worldwide by flagging Veer’s future vessels. This would further strengthen its reputation as a leader in sustainable shipping and attract more global maritime partnerships.
The agreement marks a pivotal step for Antigua and Barbuda in the global push toward carbon-free shipping. By committing to green fuel infrastructure, supporting zero-emission vessels, and modernizing port operations, the country is setting the stage for a cleaner, more sustainable maritime future.
This transformation not only benefits the Caribbean but also positions Antigua as a pioneering force in the new era of decarbonized shipping.
