At a World Economic Forum panel in Gothenburg, Sweden, APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the use of renewable energy in ports, highlighting APM Terminals’ leadership with a 40% renewable energy operation and ambitious targets for 2030. This discussion, reported by APM Terminals, called for collaborative industry efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and address the cost barriers of green fuels.

Driving Decarbonization in Ports and Beyond

APM Terminals is committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2040. The company has already reduced emissions by 13% since 2020 and plans to expand shore power technology to more ports, facilitating emission reductions for its customers. Svendsen emphasized that achieving net-zero requires the broader port ecosystem to work collectively.

Collaborative Efforts through Public-Private Partnerships

Svendsen stressed the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in securing stable renewable energy sources and developing efficient power infrastructure. He highlighted the significant cost differences between low-emission fuels and fossil fuels, underscoring the need for industry-wide collaboration to make sustainable alternatives economically viable.

Need for Policy Support and Infrastructure Planning

Calling on the International Maritime Organization to establish a pricing mechanism for green fuels by 2027, Svendsen advocated for proactive planning of future port infrastructure. He urged governments and stakeholders to make joint commitments to accelerate the decarbonization of the shipping industry, ensuring that communities worldwide benefit from a cleaner, more sustainable future.
