APM Terminals (APMT), Maersk’s port operating subsidiary, has finished a significant expansion and upgrade of its container terminal in Salalah, Oman, reports Alphaliner on LinkedIn.
Upgraded terminal
A $300 million investment has significantly upgraded the infrastructure at APM Terminals’ Salalah port. Improvements include:
- Berths and Pier: Six deep-water berths along a 2,200-meter pier.
- Yard Expansion: A 5-hectare yard extension, increasing container storage capacity by 10%, including 2,000 additional reefer plugs for cold storage.
- Improved Road Connectivity: Enhanced road access to the terminal.
- Ship-to-Shore Cranes: 27 cranes, including ten new, extra-large units with a 58-meter lift height and 75-meter outreach, capable of handling vessels of all sizes.
The upgraded terminal will soon welcome Hapag-Lloyd’s “Megamax” ships on the Asia-Europe “NE1” service (part of the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk’s “AE2”).
The terminal’s design capacity has increased from 4.5 million TEU to 6.5 million TEU. While a Phase 3 expansion has been planned for years, its future remains uncertain.
