APMT Pier 400 Electrifies Fleet to Drive Greener Port Operations

  • Pier 400 replaces 28 diesel vehicles with electric models, cutting around 60 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
  • Launch of electric straddle carrier pilot signals progress toward zero-emissions cargo equipment.
  • Terminal upgrades support clean air and net-zero goals by 2040.

APM Terminals at Pier 400 in Los Angeles has taken a major leap toward sustainable port operations by electrifying both its light-duty vehicles and heavy-duty cargo-handling equipment. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce emissions and align with regional and global environmental targets.

The first phase of this transformation saw the replacement of 28 internal combustion vehicles with all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 models. This upgrade alone is expected to eliminate nearly 60 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. To support this shift, Pier 400 has installed multiple charging stations, including one Level 3 dual-port DC fast charger and four Level 2 dual-port charging units. Additional chargers are also planned to support staff, visitors, and public access. For safety and operational control, the new electric vehicles are speed-limited to 25 mph.

In a further step toward green operations, Pier 400 has partnered with Kalmar to introduce fully electric cargo-handling equipment. The pilot includes two newly built electric AutoStrads™ and the retrofit of two hybrid straddle carriers. These machines will operate using on-road fast-charging stations and advanced energy management systems, allowing for efficient charging and continuous terminal activity.

This electrification initiative is part of a larger $60 million pilot program, and Pier 400 is one of five terminals globally selected by APM Terminals for this major decarbonization effort. The project also supports the San Pedro Bay Ports’ Clean Air Action Plan, which targets zero emissions for all cargo-handling equipment by 2030 and a fully zero-emission drayage truck fleet by 2035. APM Terminals is committed to reaching net-zero emissions across its global operations by 2040.

With these efforts, Pier 400 is setting a benchmark for cleaner, safer, and more sustainable maritime logistics, demonstrating how major terminals can lead the way in climate-forward operations.
