TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto) today announced that its AR navigation system (Note 1), jointly developed with FURUNO Electric CO., LTD. (President: Yukio Furuno; Headquarters: Nishinomiya-shi, Hyogo Prefecture), has acquired certification in the Products & Solutions (P&S) category (Note 2) of Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK)’s new “Innovation Endorsement” certification service tailored to innovative technologies and initiatives.
AR Navigation System
The AR Navigation System uses augmented reality (AR) technology to superimpose photos collected from the bridge and trip information to give crew members visual help during their watch-keeping and ship operations.
A classification association called ClassNK certifies goods and services under the “Innovation Endorsement” label for goods that, by encouraging their wider use and advancement, improve environmental protection and maritime safety. The certification’s issuance attests to a product’s ability to increase operating safety through the application of digital technology.
Certification
On MOL Group-operated vessels, the AR navigation system has already been installed as necessary, and the group will take this certification as an opportunity to increase the number of vessels outfitted with this system.
In order to gain customers’ continued trust and establish itself as their top choice for shipping and logistics services, MOL consistently places safety as a top priority and proactively develops and improves products, such as this AR navigation system, that contribute to the safety of marine traffic.
