Armed Assailants Fire at Vessel Off Malaysian Coast

Pirates attacked a vessel off the Malaysian coast, says report in Protection Vessel.

What happened?

Four armed persons in a speedboat approached and fired upon a tug towing an unladen barge. This resulted in the Master being shot in the leg at 1230 UTC in position 05:38N – 118: 57E, around 12nm NE of Sabah Coast, Malaysia.

What actions were taken?

An alarm was raised and distress message sent on VHF Ch 16. A Royal Malaysian Police boat responded and took the injured Master to a hospital. Remaining crew was reported safe.
