Founded in 1951, Asahi Tankers has established itself as a key provider of marine transportation services for petroleum and chemical products. In recent years, the company has become a pioneer in sustainable shipping, introducing cutting-edge vessels powered by clean technologies.
Breakthrough in Zero-Emission Shipping
In 2022, Asahi Tankers achieved a global milestone with the delivery of the world’s first all-electric, zero-emission tanker. Named Asahi, the vessel is powered by a massive lithium-ion battery supplied by Corvus Energy. This innovation allows the tanker to operate without producing CO2, NOx, SOx, or particulate emissions, setting new benchmarks for green shipping.
Advancing Sustainable Vessel Development
Beyond the Asahi, the company has also invested in hybrid electric tankers and continues to explore advanced vessel technologies. These efforts reflect Asahi Tankers’ long-term vision of reducing the environmental impact of maritime transportation while maintaining high service efficiency.
The Role of the MBF
Asahi Tankers is actively engaged in the Maritime Battery Forum (MBF), which brings together more than 90 members from three continents. The forum serves as a global platform for information exchange, discussions, and reviews of new technologies that complement battery-powered solutions and contribute to the zero-emissions goal.
Launch of the Global Alliance for Maritime Electrification (GAME)
Recently, MBF joined forces with IEMA (International Electric Marine Association), ZESTAs (Zero Emission Ship Technology Association), and EOPSA (European Onshore Power Supply Association) to establish the Global Alliance for Maritime Electrification (GAME). The coalition’s initial focus is on accelerating the electrification of inland, nearshore, and commercial vessels, marking an important step towards decarbonizing maritime industries.
With innovations such as the Asahi electric tanker and active participation in international alliances like GAME, Asahi Tankers is driving forward the transition to a cleaner, zero-emission maritime future. The company’s leadership highlights the growing role of electrification in shaping the next generation of sustainable shipping.
