Asia Container Market Heats Up: Drewry’s IACI Shows Significant Gains

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), which tracks the average spot freight rates for containers within Asia, saw a 6% increase over the two weeks leading up to April 30, 2025. The index reached $706 per 40-foot container. This rise indicates a strengthening of spot rates in the intra-Asian container shipping market during this period, reports Drewry.

Upward Trend 

Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) has shown a significant upward trend in the latter half of April, increasing by 6% to reach $706 per 40ft container. This represents a substantial 17% recovery within just one month. This rise marks the second consecutive increase for the index, following a period of declines that began in mid-December.  

The Drewry’s Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) tracks actual spot container freight rates for key shipping routes within Asia. The index, which will now be updated every two weeks, comprises 18 specific route indices, each representing an individual shipping route, as well as a composite index that provides an overall view of the market. All reported figures are in USD per 40ft container.
