Growth in shipments from China led the overall container movement on the route, which has continued to increase year on year for 16 months running.

By country of origin, exports from China and Hong Kong accounted for 1.25 million TEUs, up 10.5%; from Southeast Asia, 196,474 TEUs, up 4.1%; and from other Northeast Asian economies, 140,450 TEUs, down 5.8%.

By destination, exports to North Europe came to one million TEUs, up 10.7%; to the Eastern Mediterranean, 295,283 TEUs, up 1.4%; and to the Western Mediterranean, 292,150 TEUs up 6.2%.

Last-minute demand increases before the European Commission (EC) raised import tariffs on Chinese EVs in July were highly effective, the JMC sees, indicating that it will keep an eye on future impacts.

Container imports from Europe to Asia, meanwhile, totaled 537,854 TEUs in June, which shrank 0.1%, their first year-on-year contraction in two months.

By origin, imports from North Europe amounted to 367,940 TEUs, down 1.9%; from the Western Mediterranean, 89,264 TEUs, up 2.7%; and from the Eastern Mediterranean, 80,650 TEUs, up 5.5%.

By destination, containers to China came to 261,581 TEUs, up 1.7%; to Southeast Asia, 152,923 TEUs, down 5%; and to other Northeastern Asian economies, 123,349 TEUs, up 2.4%.

In the first half, Asia’s exports to Europe increased 6.7% to 8.75 million TEUs, while imports from Europe, 0.3% to 3.19 million TEUs.
