  • ATAREC pioneers wave energy with WaveBeat at Tanger-Med Port, tapping into vast potential.
  • Focused on port infrastructure, their technology aims for broader global utility.
  • Funding hurdles and partnerships pose challenges in advancing marine energy solutions.

Wave Energy

ATAREC, founded by Mohamed Taha El Ouaryachi and Oussama Nour, harnesses wave energy at Tanger-Med Port. WaveBeat, their innovation, converts sea motion into renewable energy via a patented buoy system. Visionaries aim to exploit wave potential for sustainable solutions.

WaveBeat’s development involved rigorous studies, simulations, and prototyping at Tanger-Med Port. Collaborating globally, they ensured optimal functionality through meticulous fabrication, assembly, and continuous performance monitoring.

Prototype Evolution

The development of the prototype, conducted during 2020 and 2021, was followed by the construction of a more advanced demonstrator, which is rated at around 7kW.

Taha El Ouaryachi emphasized proving WaveBeat’s electricity conversion in real sea conditions, including PTO and grid optimization. Choosing Tanger-Med was strategic, leveraging a long-standing partnership, optimal wave energy (110MW), and logistical support.

The port’s significance as an industrial hub aligns with the need for sustainable energy amid EU’s CO2 reduction goals.

Port Solutions

ATAREC prioritizes WaveBeat for ports, eyeing global expansion. Their focus on maritime solutions aligns with the technology’s port-centric design and cost competitiveness.

“We recognize the broader potential of our technology. As we continue to advance and scale, we do envision the possibility of developing utility-scale devices for other facilities such as desalination, offshore platform, artificial Islands, and tourism facilities.

“This expansion aligns with our long-term goal of contributing to the broader renewable energy landscape and we believe that marine energy is the key to solve the problem of intermittence of other renewable energy sources,” said Taha El Ouaryachi.

Strategic Progression

ATAREC plans to refine WaveBeat based on ongoing demonstrations, aiming for efficiency and client connections. Geographic focus stays on port sectors with criteria like energy potential and existing infrastructure.

Ambitious international expansion targets markets in Denmark, UK, West Europe, and West Africa. Exploring long-term options, they consider combining wave energy with tidal current turbines for enhanced capacity factors.

Funding Challenges

Funding hurdles and lack of private-public partnerships challenge startups like ATAREC. Limited VC support emphasizes reliance on non-dilutive funds and grants. ATAREC secured €900,000 via equity and grants, pursuing more funding for WaveBeat’s acceleration. Future plans involve launching a fundraising campaign to drive further development.

Taha El Ouaryachi advocates for increased public-private partnerships in wave energy. Collaboration within the sector and better representation aim to raise awareness and attract investors. He urges global initiatives like Ocean Energy Europe to expand, emphasizing the need for collective effort in addressing climate change.
