Australia and India have taken another major step in strengthening their defence partnership, with a particular focus on maritime collaboration. During the inaugural Australia–India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue, both nations reaffirmed their shared vision for promoting regional peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Deepening Maritime Collaboration

The two countries discussed the Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap, which aims to boost coordination across the Indian Ocean and the wider Indo-Pacific region. This initiative highlights their commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation, ensuring maritime safety, and countering shared challenges such as illegal fishing and piracy.
In addition, both sides expressed support for renewing the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, reinforcing their long-term strategic partnership.

Advancing Defence Ties Through Joint Exercises and Agreements

The dialogue also marked the signing of the Implementing Arrangement on Mutual Submarine Rescue Support and Cooperation, demonstrating a high level of trust and technical collaboration. Progress was noted on operationalising the Air-to-Air Refuelling arrangement, which will enhance interoperability between the Indian and Australian air forces.

Australia welcomed India’s participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025, while India appreciated Australia’s invitation to its submarine rescue exercise Black Carillon. These joint exercises, along with enhanced information-sharing mechanisms, underline the growing strategic and operational synergy between the two countries.

The inaugural Defence Ministers’ Dialogue marks a new era in Australia–India defence relations, especially in the maritime domain. With shared values and strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, both nations are poised to play a vital role in promoting regional security, stability, and cooperation.
