Australia and Japan have signed a deal to ship liquid hydrogen in bulk from Victoria, in what will be a world first.
A pilot project is expected to start in 2020.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries is building the pilot boat to carry the hydrogen and Shell is also involved in the project.
Under the plan hydrogen will be produced from brown coal from the Latrobe Valley.
Japan is hungry for hydrogen as an alternative energy source following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 resulting from a tsunami and earthquake.
Liquid hydrogen could be potentially used to power cars.
An international code regulating the transport of liquified gas currently doesn’t cover bulk liquid hydrogen.
The Australia and Japan have worked together to develop a set of shipping safety standards.
Representatives from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Japan’s transport ministry signed an agreement in Canberra on Wednesday.
