Axpo Solutions has marked a major milestone in maritime energy transition by completing the first-ever LNG ship-to-ship (STS) bunkering operation at the Port of Sines, Portugal, on 5 July 2025. This operation reinforces the company’s commitment to expanding LNG availability and supporting decarbonisation of the European shipping sector.
Successful LNG Bunkering Operation Under SIMOPS
In this landmark operation, Axpo safely transferred 2,700 metric tonnes of LNG to the MSC Togo using Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) protocols. SIMOPS allows bunkering to take place alongside cargo operations, enhancing efficiency and port turnaround times without compromising safety.
Daniele Corti, Head of Small Scale LNG at Axpo, emphasized the company’s long-term goal:
“At Axpo, we’re deeply committed to expanding the availability of LNG as a marine fuel in more ports across Europe, supporting the meaningful decarbonisation of the maritime transport sector,”
Advancing Clean Marine Fuel Infrastructure in Europe
This operation marks Axpo’s growing role in the European LNG bunkering landscape, and positions Port of Sines as a key player in low-carbon shipping infrastructure. With regulatory pressure mounting to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, LNG is increasingly viewed as a viable transitional fuel.
Axpo’s initiative helps enable cleaner and more flexible fuel supply options, supporting the maritime sector’s shift away from conventional fossil fuels.
Axpo’s successful STS LNG bunkering in Portugal not only sets a new precedent for operations in the region but also underscores the company’s leadership in clean energy solutions for maritime transport. As Axpo continues expanding its LNG footprint across European ports, it paves the way for a greener, more sustainable shipping future.
