Axpo, a leader in sustainable marine fuels, has completed Spain’s first ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation for a large container ship. The company delivered over 4,000 cubic meters of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG to the CMA CGM FORT BOURBON at the Port of Algeciras. This milestone operation, along with other recent successes in ports like Málaga and Sines, highlights Axpo’s role in advancing the decarbonization of the maritime industry.

Sustainable Sourcing and Certification

The Bio-LNG used in the operation was sourced through a process called virtual liquefaction at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena. This facility, a key LNG hub in the Mediterranean, received its International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) in July 2024. This certification guarantees that the plant adheres to the environmental, social, and traceability standards set by the European Commission, ensuring the fuel’s sustainability. The official proof of sustainability for this specific delivery was issued by Enagás in early August 2025.

Commitment to Green Shipping

Axpo is committed to expanding its Bio-LNG portfolio and leading the transition to greener shipping. The company’s Head of Small Scale LNG, Daniele Corti, emphasized that this operation showcases Axpo’s dedication to providing sustainable solutions and helping customers meet their emissions targets. The text also underscores the importance of collaborative efforts and partnerships in achieving global emissions goals and promoting a more sustainable future for marine logistics.
