In a significant step toward maritime decarbonisation, Axpo has successfully completed Spain’s first ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Algeciras. This achievement reinforces Axpo’s leadership in providing sustainable marine fuel solutions, particularly in the large container shipping sector.

The operation saw over 4,000 cubic metres of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG transferred to the CMA CGM FORT BOURBON, marking a major milestone in the green energy transition for global shipping.

Innovative Sourcing and Certified Sustainability

The Bio-LNG used in this groundbreaking operation was sourced through virtual liquefaction at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena. This facility has been ISCC EU-certified since July 2025, ensuring adherence to strict environmental, social, and traceability standards as set by the European Commission. Cartagena plays a vital role as a key LNG infrastructure hub in the Mediterranean, enabling the supply of next-generation marine fuels and contributing to Europe’s broader decarbonisation goals.

The success of this ship-to-ship operation also builds on Axpo’s previous LNG bunkering achievements at major ports including Málaga, Algeciras, and Sines—showcasing the flexibility and scalability of LNG infrastructure to accommodate sustainable fuel alternatives like Bio-LNG.

A Strong Commitment to Green Marine Transition

According to Daniele Corti, Head of Small Scale LNG at Axpo, this operation highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to offer pioneering, sustainable solutions in the Iberian LNG market. Axpo is not only expanding its Bio-LNG portfolio but also strengthening partnerships with major shipping companies to support the sector’s transition to low-emission alternatives.

The company’s strategy aligns with global efforts to reduce emissions in marine logistics through innovative and collaborative solutions. With the issuance of a standard proof of sustainability certificate in August 2025, the operation demonstrates Axpo’s credibility and long-term commitment to green shipping practices.

Axpo’s successful ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering in Algeciras marks a key development in Europe’s maritime energy landscape. By investing in certified sustainable fuels and embracing innovation in LNG infrastructure, Axpo is setting a strong precedent for the future of low-carbon shipping.

As global demand for cleaner marine fuels rises, such milestones will play an essential role in meeting international climate targets and driving a more sustainable maritime industry.
