BAE Systems And Kongsberg Expand Strategic Defence Collaboration

6

European defence giants BAE Systems and Kongsberg are deepening their longstanding partnership to bolster military capabilities across NATO allies.

After signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in May 2025 focused on maritime defence, the two companies have now expanded their cooperation into air domain technologies through a second MoU signed in July 2025.

Maritime Collaboration: From Frigates to Surveillance Systems

The May 2025 MoU targeted enhanced cooperation in the maritime domain, particularly in supporting Norway’s naval modernization efforts. Key focus areas include:

  • The Vanguard vessel system

  • A strategic support partnership for Norway’s new frigates, contingent on the selection of the UK’s Type 26 frigate

  • Strike missile systems

  • Maritime surveillance and targeting

  • Joint ship system deliveries for UK and Norwegian frigates

These efforts reflect the two companies’ shared commitment to enhancing naval interoperability and through-life support across NATO fleets.

New July 2025 MoU: Expanding into the Air Domain

The latest MoU signed in July 2025 further strengthens the alliance by expanding into the air defence sector. This agreement builds on their existing relationship and aims to unlock joint opportunities in:

  • Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS)

  • Advanced materials and mission support

  • Training and simulation

  • Combat air technologies

  • Collaborative research and technology (R&T)

This cross-domain cooperation is designed to foster innovation and offer integrated solutions for future battlefield environments.

A Proven Defence Partnership

Norway and the UK, along with BAE Systems and Kongsberg, have a rich history of defence and industrial collaboration. This evolving partnership aims not only to support domestic security but also to contribute to wider NATO readiness and innovation. These MoUs are expected to open up new market opportunities, strengthen interoperability, and ensure shared defence capabilities are future-proof.

By expanding their strategic cooperation from maritime to air defence, BAE Systems and Kongsberg are reinforcing their mutual commitment to innovation, security, and industrial growth. These agreements mark an important step toward delivering advanced, integrated defence solutions that serve the evolving needs of Norway, the UK, and allied forces across the NATO alliance.
