According to an article published in Marine Insight, Baleària incorporates its fourth smart ship ‘Marie Curie’ into its fleet.
Eco-efficient ship
It is prepared to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which will connect Valencia-Ibiza-Palma from Friday 26. The new eco-efficient ship, built in the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini, is a twin of the Hypatia de Alejandría, which at the beginning of the year was the first to sail on gas in the Mediterranean and currently takes the Barcelona-Alcúdia-Ciutadella route.
Both the Marie Curie and the other three smart ships that can navigate to Baleària gas, offer digital innovations in the services on board with the aim of improving the customer experience.
A key milestone towards commitment
The incorporation of this new ferry with dual LNG and fuel engines with a power of 20,600KW, it represents another milestone in the commitment to innovation and sustainability that the company is carrying out. Baleària has invested 200 million euros in the construction of Marie Curie and the Hypatia de Alejandría.
‘Smart ship’: technology at the service of the customer
Among the technological innovations of the ship, the digitalization of the entire signage stands out, the camera system installed in the accommodations of the pets (which allows passengers to see them at all times through their smartphone ), the self-service totems in the cafeteria and self-service, the free text Whatsapp service during the entire voyage or access to the Internet for bonuses.
As for digital leisure, the ship has a platform to access, through mobile devices, television and film content, as well as games and magazines. This digital content platform is also available on stateroom smart TVs.

The new Baleària smart ship, which can reach 25 knots of speed, has 186.5 meters in length and a capacity for 880 people, 2,194 linear meters of cargo and 166 vehicles.
It has different passenger accommodations:
- three lounges of reclining seats (two standards and one superior) and 120 cabins with capacity for up to four people and offering a full bathroom,
- air conditioning,
- Wi-Fi and smart TV with the digital entertainment system included.
In addition, the ship has two cabins adapted for people with reduced mobility, shop, cafeteria, self-service and à la carte restaurant and jacuzzis on the outer deck.
This ship, baptized with the name of the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and that created, during the First World War, the first mobile units, follows the line of the shipping company to meet one of the goals set by the Sustainable Development Goals: equality and empowerment of women. In total, Baleària has six ships with names of women pioneers in their fields.
Pioneers in LNG
Baleària is a worldwide pioneer shipping company in the use of liquefied natural gas. He has been working on projects related to this fuel since 2012 and is a founding partner of the Spanish Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (GASNAM).
It currently has four ferries with dual engines that can be powered by liquefied natural gas, two of them newly built (the Hypatia de Alejandría and the Marie Curie ) and two other re-motorized ( Naples and Abel Matutes ), which are Four other re-motorizations will be added until 2021 (of which five are part of the LNNGHIVE2 Green & Smart Links project, co-financed by the European Commission’s CEF Blending program) and the first.
The world’s fast ferry powered by liquefied natural gas engines, Eleanor Roosevelt, which is scheduled to be operational in 2020. Thus, the current fleet plan includes a total of 9 smart ships to LNG in 2021.
