  • Bangkokmax vessels set the standard for intra-regional and feeder trades.
  • 1,800 TEU class replaces routes once served by 1,100 TEU ships.
  • Originally built for the Chao Phraya River, Bangkokmax now serves wider ports.

In recent years, there’s been a noticeable uptick in demand for ships that can carry around 1,800 TEU, making them a vital part of the container fleet, reports LinkedIn.

Bangkokmax: The Go-To Choice for Regional Trades

For many mid-sized intra-regional and feeder routes, vessels known as ‘Bangkokmax’ have become the go-to standard. This size class has also turned into one of the most sought-after options in the charter market.

Taking Over Smaller Vessel Routes

The 1,800 TEU class is increasingly encroaching on routes that were once the stronghold of the popular 1,100 TEU vessels, showcasing its rising competitiveness.

The Evolution and Use of the Bangkokmax

Initially crafted to navigate the physical constraints of Thailand’s Chao Phraya River, the modern ‘Bangkokmax’ has broadened its horizons. Nowadays, it operates on a variety of routes and key ports, including Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong, Keelung, and Manila.

Charter Market Edge

When you compare it to similar-sized ships like the ‘Wenchong 1700,’ which currently charters for about USD 26,000 per day on a 12-month basis, the contemporary 1,800+ TEU ‘Bangkokmax’ vessels command higher rates, reaching around USD 31,000 per day.
