Barcelona Port Sets Record in LNG Supply for Ships in 2024

The Port of Barcelona experienced a significant surge in LNG supply as marine fuel in 2024, reaching 229,750 m³. This represents a 60.5% growth from the previous year, consolidating its position as Spain’s leading LNG bunkering port, supplying 40% of the country’s total LNG for ships, according to safety4sea.

Breakdown of LNG Refueling Operations

Throughout 2024, 491 LNG bunkering operations were carried out. The majority (402 operations) were executed using tanker trucks (TTS and MTTS), delivering 45,427 m³, while 89 operations were completed via ship-to-ship (STS) barges, supplying 184,324 m³ of LNG.

LNG-Powered Ship Traffic

The increasing adoption of LNG as a marine fuel was evident in ship arrivals at Barcelona. Of the 8,398 total vessel calls in 2024, 822 ships used LNG, making up 10% of all port calls. This highlights Barcelona’s growing role in facilitating the transition to cleaner marine fuels.
