On November 27, a barge transporting wind turbines worth millions reportedly sank in the river after the Captain tried to navigate under the bridge.
What happened?
The barge had been assigned the task of transporting turbine poles to Ayutthaya but the vessel unfortunately sank when the captain attempted to sail under a bridge. The vessel sank in the Chao Phraya River, about 300 metres from the Nuan Chawi Bridge, in Muang district.
Vessel rendered unstable:
When the captain had planned to sail under the bridge, the crew pumped the water into the hold as extra ballast, to lower its profile significantly so it could pass under the bridge during a high tide. It became unstable, sank and settled on the bottom. Only a small part of the wind sail is visible above water.
Salvage plans chartered:
The salvage experts are currently assessing the situation to chart out plans to salvage the wind turbine worth millions.
Somkiat Kosikrainiramol, director of the marine department regional office in Nonthaburi, said, “The barge was taking four wind turbine towers worth millions of Baht from Chon Buri’s Sattahip port to Nakhon Luang district of Ayutthaya province”.
The traffic in the riverway was not affected since the sunken vessel and cargo had been clearly marked out, and other vessels were still able to travel the river.
