Battleship Texas Finds A Permanent Home At Pier 15 In Galveston

After more than a year of uncertainty, the USS Texas, the last remaining World War I dreadnought battleship, will be permanently moored at Pier 15 in Galveston.

The decision was approved this week by the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees, bringing an end to the ship’s relocation limbo that lasted over a year. Initially authorized for a lease agreement, the deal was later revoked, leaving the battleship’s future uncertain. From August 2022 to March 2024, the USS Texas underwent extensive repairs in a Galveston dry dock.

Why Pier 15?

Vice Chairman Jeff Patterson explained that safety and storm protection were the key reasons for selecting Pier 15 as the battleship’s new home.

  • Navigational Safety: The location ensures the safety of shipping channels, as emphasized by pilots, the Coast Guard, and the Corps of Engineers.
  • Hurricane Protection: Pier 15 offers better protection from storms than other locations.
  • Future Expansion Plans: The site does not interfere with Galveston’s future port development.

State-Funded, No Cost to Residents

The Battleship Texas Foundation, which owns the vessel, is state-funded, meaning Galveston residents won’t bear the financial burden of mooring the ship.

“There are no port funds being used to move the Battleship Texas here,” Patterson confirmed. “The state of Texas and the Battleship Texas Foundation are financing the move.”

A New Tourist and Educational Attraction

The Battleship Texas Foundation expressed excitement over the move, highlighting its tourism and educational benefits.

“Big news for Battleship Texas! After years of hard work, we’re thrilled to have the support of the Wharves Board to bring TEXAS to Pier 15 in Galveston—just a short walk from Pier 21 and the historic Galveston Strand,” the foundation shared on social media.

As the last ship of its kind, the USS Texas will serve as a living museum, promoting history, education, and tourism.

The exact opening date for public visits has not yet been announced.
