Belfast Harbour is set to trial the UK’s first autonomous Terminal Tractors (TT) for container transport within port areas, thanks to nearly £400k in funding from the UK Department for Transport’s Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund. This trial, hosted at Victoria Terminal 3, is a pioneering project for the UK and Ireland and will span five months starting in November.

- As part of its sustainability mission, Belfast Harbour is collaborating with its tenants to address Scope 3 emissions, which pertain to indirect emissions from third-party sources. Laura O’Neill, Digital Transformation Manager at Belfast Harbour, noted the study’s potential to reduce idle time and increase container handling efficiency, aligning with Belfast Harbour’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) objectives.

- The implementation of autonomous technology may create higher-skilled job opportunities within the port, as new roles emerge in managing and maintaining these advanced systems.

- The autonomous TTs are projected to deliver up to 30% fuel efficiency, thanks to optimized fleet operations. This increase in efficiency is a key aspect of Belfast Harbour’s plan to achieve a more sustainable and environmentally friendly port system.
