  • MPC Container Ships and Berg Propulsion successfully collaborated to develop and integrate advanced propulsion systems on both vessels despite newbuilding challenges.
  • Berg helped design an optimized engine room layout and provided customized propeller and control systems to enhance ship performance and fuel efficiency.
  • North Sea Container Line highlighted the vessels’ proven efficiency and the importance of stakeholder collaboration in making green shipping a cost-effective choice.
  • The ships feature an advanced hybrid energy management system that balances multiple power sources and enables zero-emission operations while in port.

NCL Nordland, the second of two container ships designed to promote the use of bio-methanol for cleaner shipping, has officially entered service following the successful launch of its sister ship, Vestland. Owned by MPC Container Ships and chartered to North Sea Container Line, these 1,300 TEU dual-fuel vessels operate on a mix of methanol and marine gas oil, serving routes between Norway and Rotterdam, according to the report published by BERG Propulsion.

Partnership and Innovation Deliver Greater Efficiency in Shipping

Christian Rychly, Chief Operating Officer of MPC Container Ships, expressed appreciation for Berg Propulsion and its partners, highlighting their successful development and integration of complex systems into fully operational machinery aboard both vessels despite typical newbuilding challenges. Mattias Hansson, Senior Global Sales Manager at Berg, noted that Berg acted as a co-designer for the integrated main propulsion system, optimizing the engine room layout to enhance aft ship design and overall performance. He emphasized the strong teamwork among all parties involved, which contributed to the ships’ exceptional fuel efficiency.

Berg’s tailored solution also includes optimized propeller designs and sophisticated power and control electronics, ensuring operational flexibility. Bente Hetland, Managing Director of North Sea Container Line, remarked that Nordland is already demonstrating efficiency in service, showcasing how collaborative efforts among stakeholders can address decarbonization challenges in a cost-effective manner and make green freight a preferred option for customers.

Mattias Dombrowe, Business Manager for Electric System Integration at Berg, described the vessels’ advanced energy management system as a next-level approach that effectively balances multiple energy sources. The hybrid setup optimizes the use of gensets, shaft alternators, and a 250 kWh battery for load balancing during peak demands such as thruster use, while also supporting zero-emission operations when docked through shore power connection.
