Berge Rederi And Norsepower Partner To Launch Sustainable Cargo Vessels

72

Norwegian shipowner Berge Rederi and Norsepower, a leader in wind propulsion systems, have joined forces to equip two cutting-edge general cargo carriers with Norsepower Rotor Sails™. Designed by Marine Design and Consulting AS (MDC) and built by Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., these vessels will set new standards for sustainable maritime operations in harsh Northern Sea conditions.

Key Features of the New Cargo Vessels

  • Length: 130 meters.
  • Rotor Sails: Two fixed 24m x 4m Norsepower Rotor Sails per vessel, optimized for extreme weather like snow, ice, and high winds.
  • Hybrid Propulsion: Battery packs and shaft generators for hybrid-electric operation in short distances.
  • Sustainability Focus: Expected to achieve significant fuel savings and emissions reductions compared to similar vessels.

Environmental and Operational Benefits

The integration of Norsepower Rotor Sails will leverage wind propulsion to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The vessels’ hybrid systems complement the sails, providing operational flexibility and lowering environmental impact.

Operating primarily along the Norwegian coast and the Northern Sea route, the ships are tailored for regions with challenging sea conditions. The robust design ensures reliable performance, aligning with Berge Rederi’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

Industry Collaboration

  • Norsepower: Provided wind propulsion technology and expertise in designing systems for harsh maritime conditions.
  • Berge Rederi: Brought operational insights to ensure the vessels meet high safety and efficiency standards.
  • Marine Design and Consulting AS (MDC): Conducted hydrodynamic and structural studies to integrate emission-reducing technologies seamlessly.
