Ship management services company Bernhard Schulte has taken a significant step into the liquid CO2 business by placing an order for its inaugural carbon dioxide tanker. The order, confirmed on December 14th, will be executed by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore (DSOC), constructing a vessel with a cargo capacity of 7,300m3.

Supporting Cross-Border CO2 Transportation and Storage

The custom-built ships will play a crucial role in transporting liquefied CO2 from the Northern Lights project to customers across Northwest Europe. This project is a joint venture owned by Shell, TotalEnergies, and Equinor, with three vessels already in the pipeline, two under construction at DSOC, and another ordered in September this year.

Northern Lights Project: A Milestone Achievement

Børre Jacobsen, Managing Director of Northern Lights, described Bernhard Schulte’s order as a milestone, emphasizing the necessity of strong partnerships for success. He expressed confidence in the collaboration between Northern Lights JV, DSOC, and Bernhard Schulte.

Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Shipping

Northern Lights is actively developing a ship-based CO2 transport solution, incorporating innovative technologies in ship design to minimize CO2 emissions. The primary fuel for these vessels will be LNG, contributing to a 34% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional ships using marine fuel. Additional sustainable technologies, including wind-assisted rotor sails and air lubrication, further enhance the eco-friendly profile of these ships.

CEO Excitement for a Sustainable Future

Ian Beveridge, CEO of Bernhard Schulte, expressed enthusiasm for joining the Northern Lights project to contribute to CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. Ordering this vessel marks an exciting expansion for Bernhard Schulte’s fleet portfolio, placing the company at the forefront of innovation in the tanker segment.

This strategic move aligns with the industry’s growing emphasis on sustainability and showcases Bernhard Schulte’s commitment to pioneering environmentally conscious practices in maritime transport.
