  • Comprehensive Training Courses to Boost African Maritime Talent.

The shipping industry is finding it challenging to acquire skilled young workers because the number of working-age adults in seafaring nations is set to decrease over the next two years. As a way to sustain business, the companies are diversifying the pool of seafarers, reports BSM.

BSM Opens Maritime Training Centre in Ghana

Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has opened a new Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in Ghana, enhancing its presence and broadening its maritime services in West Africa. The centre is situated on the campus of the Regional Maritime University (RMU) in Accra, Ghana. BSM opened a local representative office and a cadet programme with RMU in 2012.

Comprehensive Training Courses at the New MTC

The MTC provides vocational training for cadets, officers, and ratings in addition to the university’s current programs. BSM also offers customized training courses for hospitality crew on cruise ships.

Commitment to Training Future Seafarers

Eva Rodriguez, HR Marine Director at BSM, emphasized the company’s dedication to developing seafaring talent: “At BSM, we place emphasis on the selection, development and management of our seagoing employees which is key to the safe and efficient operations of the vessels of our clients. With the opening of the new MTC in Ghana, BSM has taken a significant step towards enhancing its training offering to seafarers from the region and cultivating highly skilled professionals who deliver the highest levels of performance.”

She added, “With the establishment of a local training facility, not only we are underlining our ongoing commitment to the region but also addressing the growing demand for skilled crew by diversifying our crew pool.”

BSM’s Longstanding Investment in African Seafarers

BSM started training African seafarers in 2012, when the number of West African seafarers was less than 30. The company now has 600 seafarers from the region as part of its crew pool. The continent of Africa, whose population is set to double by 2050 and whose economy is growing at a rapid pace, offers a major opportunity to source the next wave of maritime manpower.

State-of-the-Art Training Across Six Global Institutions

BSM’s new MTC in Ghana is the sixth of its type for the company. The training centres offer specialist skills and programmes designed to meet industry and client-specific requirements. Courses blend theoretical learning with practical experience, using state-of-the-art facilities and experienced trainers to equip maritime staff for changing industry demands.

Certified Training and Simulator Programmes

BSM MTCs are ISO 9001:2015 certified and provide DNV-approved simulator training. Training includes operational, safety, and environmental training for general and specialized ships to ensure seafarers are prepared for the requirements of the contemporary maritime sector.
