Shipowners are seeing the benefits of IT investment and big data analytics in lower fuel bills and improving operational uptime of their ships.
News from Nor-Shipping shows that ship managers and operators are improving their operations from the results of data processing and remote IT monitoring.
NYK is working with class society DNV GL on a data centre – and told Riviera that they want to use the information gleaned to optimise fleet operations and efficiencies on ships.
At a Riviera co-hosted seminar at Nor-Shipping, Navios Group IT director Katerina Raptaki described the benefits the ship operator gets from remote monitoring and diagnostics of onboard IT systems. She said data analytics helps improve fleet operations.
Tsakos Energy Navigation president Nikolas Tsakos expects more IT technology to be deployed on its ships and Gulf Navigation has seen technology lower its operating costs.
There are many other examples from the announcements made at Nor-Shipping where shipowners and managers have reduced operating expenditure and improved operations through investment in IT and communications. These will be reported on website and publications, including the upcoming Complete Guide to VSAT.
It is clear that investment in IT and data analytics can result in operational improvements and cost savings, so we expect to see more shipowners follow the industry leaders in these investments.
