Bill Gates is said to be selling his $645 million hydrogen-powered superyacht, Breakthrough or Project 821, to Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, reports Marine Insight.
A First-of-Its-Kind Hydrogen-Powered Vessel
Commissioned by Dutch shipbuilder giant Feadship in 2021 and launched three years later, the 390-foot Breakthrough is the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht. The yacht has two gigantic master suites, a helipad, gym, spa, infinity pool, and several outdoor lounges.
Ownership Not Officially Confirmed, Though Generally Acrtibuted to Gates
Neither Gates nor Feadship officially confirmed ordering the yacht but for a very long time now it has always been rumoured that the Microsoft founder and 13th richest human on earth owned the yacht. Sources indicate that Gates never did walk on board and is reportedly attempting to offload it now, Luxury Launches reports.
Canadian Billionaire Patrick Dovigi Tipped for the Buy
The purchaser is thought to be Patrick Dovigi, former minor league hockey player and current CEO of Green For Life Environmental Inc.—one of North America’s most successful waste management companies. As of April 2025, the company is worth $18.62 billion, reports Market Watch. Dovigi, whose net worth is around $1 billion, is the 97th richest Canadian.
Breakthrough Praised as a Game-Changer in Yacht Design
Jamie Edmiston, head of yacht brokerage firm Edmiston, called Breakthrough the most incredible yacht ever built. In addition to its upscale amenities, the ship features a gigantic spiral staircase, an observation room, and a top speed of 17 knots—allowing it to travel across the Atlantic.
Dovigi is familiar with the superyacht world. In 2023, he bought the 377-foot AHPO superyacht—six decks tall from billionaire Michael Lee-Chin for $362 million. Less than two years after that, AHPO is being offered for sale at $370 million by Edmiston and Moran Yacht & Ship.
Breakthrough Was Quietly Listed After Launch
Quaintly, Breakthrough was discreetly put on the market shortly after its launch in 2024, with price tags said to be over $600 million, reported The Sun.
