BIMCO Launches Energy Efficiency Data Sharing Clause 2025 To Foster Maritime Sustainability

21

BIMCO has unveiled its Energy Efficiency Data Sharing Clause for Time Charter Parties 2025, a forward-looking legal provision aimed at enhancing sustainability and collaboration in the maritime industry. The clause allows charterers to utilize and install onboard sensors for data collection, ensuring that energy efficiency and vessel performance are consistently monitored and improved.

Unlocking Performance Insights Through Onboard Sensors

Under the clause, charterers gain the right to access existing onboard sensors and, with owner approval, install additional ones. These sensors become the owner’s property and part of the vessel’s insured equipment, streamlining accountability while supporting data-driven efficiency measures.

Clear Cost and Responsibility Framework

The clause outlines that any added transmission or installation costs for new sensors will be covered by the charterers. All installations are subject to class, flag state approval, and legal compliance, ensuring safe and lawful integration into vessel systems.

Comprehensive Annex for Data Control

An annex accompanying the clause provides detailed specifications on sensor types, data frequency, and intended use. This document plays a vital role in clarifying expectations and ensuring all data-sharing activities are transparent and mutually agreed upon.

Industry Collaboration & Future Focus

Drafted by a BIMCO subcommittee with input from shipowners, charterers, and P&I Clubs, the clause reflects industry-wide consensus. As subcommittee chair Mattias Kjellberg notes, the aim is to foster sustainability through smarter data practices and stronger owner-charterer collaboration

The Energy Efficiency Data Sharing Clause 2025 is more than just a legal framework—it’s a strategic move towards smarter, greener, and more cooperative shipping. By enabling real-time energy monitoring while protecting both parties, it supports the shipping sector’s broader decarbonization and digitalization goals.
