  • Baleària is powering the Margarita Salas, Abel Matutes, and Rusadir ferries exclusively with bioLNG, achieving zero-emission operations on key Mediterranean routes.
  • The company has procured 132 GWh of renewable bioLNG, covering 13% of its total LNG use in 2024 and cutting 80,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
  • BioLNG, derived from livestock waste, captures methane from the atmosphere, offering over 200% greenhouse gas savings compared to conventional fuels.
  • Baleària became the first European ferry company to earn ISCC EU certification, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable maritime transport.

Baleària has strengthened its commitment to sustainable maritime transport by integrating bioLNG as a renewable energy source across several of its key routes. The fast ferry Margarita Salas and the ferry Abel Matutes, connecting Barcelona–Alcúdia–Ciutadella, along with the ferry Rusadir, operating between Málaga and Melilla, are now powered entirely by this eco-friendly fuel. According to the company, this initiative marks a major milestone in its decarbonisation roadmap and further reinforces its environmental leadership in the European ferry sector, as reported by Baleària.

Baleària adopts bioLNG to advance maritime decarbonisation

Baleària has become the first ferry company in Europe to achieve ISCC EU certification for biofuel management while incorporating bioLNG into regular operations. The Margarita Salas, Abel Matutes, and Rusadir—all equipped with dual gas engines—have been operating exclusively on this renewable fuel since early September. The company procured 132 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of bioLNG, enough to power the three vessels emissions-free until December 2025. This represents 13% of Baleària’s total LNG consumption in 2024 and is expected to prevent 80,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, equivalent to removing over 150,000 cars from the roads. The bioLNG, produced from livestock waste, captures methane from the atmosphere and converts it into clean energy, delivering over 200% greenhouse gas savings compared to fossil fuels. With ISCC certification and previous milestones such as Europe’s first decarbonised voyage in 2021, Baleària continues to lead the transition toward net-zero maritime operations through innovation, transparency, and sustainable energy practices.
