Blue Port Hamburg 2025 A Celebration of Light, Logistics, And Connectivity

8

Since 2008, Hamburg’s port has been transformed every two years into a glowing spectacle of blue light, thanks to the artistic vision of renowned light artist Michael Batz. This year’s Blue Port goes beyond Hamburg, extending across HHLA’s European network to symbolize the interconnectedness of logistics and the unifying power of light.

The Launch of Blue Port 2025

The official lighting ceremony began with the arrival of a blue-illuminated container on an electric heavy goods vehicle operated by HHLA’s freight forwarding subsidiary, Container-Transport-Dienst (CTD). Artist Michael Batz, HHLA CEO Angela Titzrath, and Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs Dr. Melanie Leonhard jointly pressed the start button to inaugurate the event.

From now until September 21, Hamburg residents and visitors can marvel at the illuminated port, the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt warehouse district, and the modern HafenCity, all bathed in a magical blue glow. HHLA is contributing significantly, with 17 container gantry cranes across its Hamburg terminals and 10 cranes in Speicherstadt brilliantly lit up.

The Blue Container’s European Journey

The launch also marks the conclusion of the blue container’s 13,000-kilometre journey through HHLA’s European network. Unveiled at Hamburg’s 836th Port Anniversary in May, the container travelled to HHLA terminals in Trieste, Italy and Tallinn, Estonia, as well as METRANS rail hubs in Prague and Dunajská Streda.

This travelling symbol underlines HHLA’s brand claim, “The Power of Networks,” as the company celebrates its 140th anniversary. For the first time, cranes outside Hamburg will also join the illumination: two container gantry cranes at HHLA TK Estonia in Muuga, near Tallinn, and three rail gantry cranes at the METRANS hub terminal in Prague.

The 2025 Blue Port not only continues a beloved Hamburg tradition but also reflects HHLA’s role as a global logistics connector. Through art, light, and symbolic journeys, the initiative highlights how Hamburg remains a vital hub in European trade while celebrating the company’s rich 140-year legacy of innovation and connectivity.
