The Blue Visby Solution (BVS) project has successfully concluded a series of prototype trials designed to test its decision-support technology’s ability to reduce GHG emissions in the maritime sector. Collaborating with Marubeni Corporation, a consortium member, the trials involved 16 LPG tankers completing 40 voyages over three months. This initiative underscores the potential of BVS to drive fuel efficiency and sustainability in global shipping operations.

Testing BVS in a First-Come-First-Served Environment

The Marubeni trials were conducted in an FCFS operational environment to evaluate BVS as a decision-support tool. The system provided optimization recommendations to operators, allowing them to balance operational and commercial priorities while addressing the inefficiencies of the “Sail Fast Then Wait” approach.

Continuous Monitoring for Operational Efficiency

A key feature of the trial was the real-time monitoring of approximately 919 vessels to ensure that participating ships maintained their positions in the FCFS queue. Operators received 31 actionable recommendations, resulting in average speed reductions from 13.6 knots to 10.6 knots, delivering a projected fuel and GHG savings of 29%.

Key Outcomes from the Marubeni Prototype Trial

The trial highlighted the effectiveness of BVS technology in delivering significant environmental benefits without impacting commercial performance. It also showcased the value of BVS as a decision-making tool, even in scenarios where partial or no speed reductions were implemented.

Comparative Insights from Earlier Trials

These results complement findings from earlier trials conducted with CBH Group in Q2 2024. The CBH Group trials, which focused on optimizing terminal operations rather than FCFS conditions, achieved GHG savings of 8% to 28%, underscoring the adaptability of BVS across different contexts.
