Brazil And Norway Sign MoU To Develop Green Shipping Corridor

9

Brazil and Norway have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance sustainable maritime transport, marking a major step toward green shipping corridors and global climate goals. The agreement, signed by Brazilian Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho and Norwegian Ambassador Odd Magne Ruud, aims to establish a low- or zero-carbon shipping corridor between the two nations.

Key Objectives of the MoU

  • Green Shipping Corridor – Development of a dedicated route for vessels powered by advanced, low-carbon technologies.
  • Climate Commitments – Supports UN’s 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Clydebank Declaration for Green Shipping Corridors from COP26.
  • Business & Research Collaboration – Involves industry stakeholders and research institutions from both countries to develop sustainable supply chains.
  • Decarbonization & Fuel Innovation – Focus on zero-emission fuel solutions, operational efficiency, and scalable green fuel infrastructure.

A Milestone for Global Shipping

Minister Silvio Costa Filho emphasized the project’s global significance, stating:

”This project will benefit not just our two countries but the entire world. Alongside the Norwegian government, we are committed to making maritime transport even more sustainable and environmentally advanced. Our goal is to build a sector that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility, positioning Brazil as a global leader in sustainable shipping,”

Norwegian Ambassador Odd Magne Ruud reinforced Norway’s commitment to the energy transition, calling the corridor a strategic opportunity to lead in green shipping innovation.

Next Steps & Future Goals

  • Pilot Project Launch – Industry leaders and research bodies will identify strategic ports and routes for the corridor.
  • Presentation at COP30 (November 2025, Belém, Brazil) – Brazil and Norway aim to showcase their green corridor model on the global stage.
  • Integration with Brazil’s Logistics Sustainability Policy – Green shipping aligns with Brazil’s broader sustainability and decarbonization agenda, including port electrification and ESG-driven policies.

This initiative solidifies Brazil and Norway’s leadership in sustainable maritime transport, setting a precedent for global shipping decarbonization.
