Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) are spearheading efforts in autonomy assurance within the maritime sector. Collaborating with key stakeholders from the UK and Japan, they are conducting a series of workshops aimed at developing standards, taxonomies, and assurance frameworks to unlock the full potential of maritime autonomy while strengthening the strategic partnership between Japan and the UK.

Advancing Autonomy Assurance

The workshops serve as a platform to advance the development of critical enabling capabilities necessary for the safe and effective operation of autonomous vessels and related technologies. Led by LR and NPL, with support from government agencies and leading universities, including the Maritime Autonomy Assurance Testbed (MAAT) program, the workshops aim to define standards and facilitate international engagement to accelerate the adoption of maritime autonomy.

Key Stakeholders and Collaborators

The event brings together a diverse array of stakeholders from both Japan and the UK, including government bodies, industry leaders, research institutions, and technology providers. Japanese attendees include representatives from the Ministry for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Japan Coast Guard, and prominent technology firms. UK participants comprise entities such as the British Embassy in Tokyo, the Met Office, and leading universities, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two nations in advancing autonomy assurance.

Strengthening Regulatory Alignment and Industry Collaboration

By fostering dialogue between MAAT and regulatory bodies, the workshops aim to enhance understanding and alignment regarding autonomy assurance standards and regulations. Furthermore, the participation of industry stakeholders underscores the commitment to collaborative innovation and the development of a robust ecosystem for maritime autonomy, laying the groundwork for future advancements and commercialization in the sector.
