Britain’s Merchant Fleet Set to Double in Size After Brexit

BRITAINNIA will rule the waves again once Britain quits the EU.

Our merchant fleet will rocket in size as more ships fly the famous “Red Duster” in a new global trade push.

The flag – properly known as the Red Ensign – will become a more common site on the high seas, according to ministers.

It is among the most admired emblems in the maritime world and every vessel sporting it is under the protection of the Royal Navy.

Shipping Minister John Hayes wants to increase the amount of trade carried under the duster to showcase Britain’s commercial might around the world.

He is to double the size of the UK ship register from 16 to 30 million gross tons after Brexit – giving a boost for jobs, exports and trade.

Mr Hayes will use this week’s International Shipping Week in London to launch the drive with tax perks, consular support and protection for flying the British flag.

He said: “In Britain’s post Brexit future we shall grow the Red Duster, forging new global relationships.”

“Our ship register has a special significance and our flag is of distinct quality.”

“Unfurling the Red Duster shows Britain’s maritime leadership to the world. Once again Britannia rules the waves and the UK will be a dominant maritime force.”
