Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has added another feather to its cap by becoming the first unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to have received a certification of ‘Normal and High Strength Ship Building Quality Steel’ from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), reports Times of India.

Approval certificate

“The works approval certificate was given to BSL in February for hot rolled coils and plates, sheets in thickness ranging from 4mm to 10mm and width from 1,100mm to 1,800mm,” said Manikant Dhan, the chief of communication of BSL, in a statement on Monday.

The steel that BSL will supply under this certification will be used in the hull of commercial ships which is the watertight enclosure of a ship that protects the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of the ship, the statement said.

BSL has been supplying steel for various strategic naval applications, including submarines, frigates, and diving support vessels (DSV) among others for a long. With this certification, steel for commercial ships will also be supplied by BSL now.

With the receipt of an inquiry from M/s Goa Shipyard Limited against a tender notice in the 2021-22 financial year for ABS grade sheets and plates, it was proposed by SAIL that BSL may initiate the process for obtaining its work approval certificate. “Since then, the research and control laboratory (RCL), BSL along with RDCIS, Bokaro center, undertook efforts to make a feasibility study for production at BSL with the existing facilities and decided to process for certification,” Dhan said.
